To My Valentine

Many a man has found he can find females somewhat vexing;
Women will say things or otherwise portray things that may seem odd and perplexing.
Do we even notice, much less distinguish, between a rose and a daisy?
Noble musing may not be our choosing, but sometimes we think you’re plain crazy.

Things are just, well, things to us. Men are a simple fraternity.
But to you, every thing you do may hold solemn whispers of eternity.
You may giggle as we struggle to, despite our every defect,
Surpass your seemingly impossible standards to earn your love and respect.

Them who quit trying are too often crying that women are shrill, shrieking shrews.
All because that which draws you is something we ignore or confuse.
Charm, we’ve been hearing, will make us endearing, or looks or money, or wit.
Is it so rare that we might instead care to learn to be relationally fit?

Deceptive lines and expensive wines may work on television,
And sculpted abs and restaurant tabs may seem to sway your decision.
Beauty displayed, though, is often portrayed as wanton narcissism.
Is it about time that we finally climb into the light of realism?

Fleeting is glory; short-lived is beauty; all things material will fade.
But there are some things that have substance, not wings; that aren’t but a vain charade.
A man with maturity, with character, with purity, need be neither a bore nor a prig.
Woman, please let us know clearly and surely that a strong man need not be a pig.

Who will deny that it is a lie that women need subtlety and art?
Fears of rejection are slain by affection that comes from an open heart.
The truth is before us: you will adore us, if we would but drop our disguise.
Lord knows your appeal—the kind that is real—lies not in your body, but your eyes.

Is there any chance that in our long dance, I’ll finally learn your ways?
To fully cherish, before I perish, how valuable have been our days?
Be certain of this: to hold and to kiss you has been my salvation through life.

You may not have aged so well,

And often you are quite grumpy

You once had a flat stomach.

Which is now round and lumpy.

Your snoring often shakes my dreams.

Many times I have awoken.

The doctor says you’re overweight.

But we all know that scale is broken.

Your days of chivalry were short and sweet,

But I haven’t seen them since.

There have been several times before

When your smells have made me wince.

I may point out one or two of your flaws,

every now and then.

But to me my darling, you are a twelve,

on a scale of one to ten.
